Solo Aging: Stronger Independence Through Connection — Why Connection Is the Real Safety Net
A distinctive resident and prospect engagement program for Life Plan Communities.
Discuss a Program for Your Community
Looking for a meaningful solo aging program that engages current residents while helping prospective residents think differently about independence, connection, and their future?
Today’s independent older adults are redefining what it means to plan for the future.
Many are single, widowed, divorced, child-free, or simply do not have dependable family nearby. They value autonomy. They have built independent lives. And they want to remain in control of their choices for as long as possible. But independence does not mean doing everything alone.
The strongest independence is supported by connection, community, and a plan.
Solo Aging: Stronger Independence Through Connection — Why Connection Is the Real Safety Net is an engaging presentation and facilitated conversation designed specifically for Life Plan Communities seeking to educate current residents while creating a meaningful experience for prospective residents.
Rather than focusing on the fears of growing older, the program helps participants explore an empowering question:
What people, relationships, resources, and community structures need to be in place so I can remain independent—even when circumstances change?
Bring Prospective Residents Into the Conversation Before They Are Ready to "Buy."
Choosing a Life Plan Community is a significant decision.
Prospective residents may spend months—or even years—considering whether to make a move. Traditional sales events can provide valuable information, but they do not always address the deeper questions influencing that decision:
Will I still feel independent?
Will I belong?
Will I have people around me I can trust?
Who will notice if something changes?
Who will be there if I need help?
A thoughtfully designed educational event creates a different kind of experience.
Instead of asking prospects to make a decision about senior living, invite them into a conversation about the life they want to create.
That conversation can change how they think about community living.

An Interactive Program—Not Just Another Lecture
Carol Marak combines presentation, storytelling, reflection, and facilitated discussion to create an experience in which current residents and prospective residents can learn from—and connect with—one another.
Drawing upon the principles of her book, Solo and Smart, Carol explores the realities of remaining independent without assuming family will always be available to provide support.
Participants consider:
- What does independence really mean as circumstances change?
- Who makes up my personal safety net today?
- Who could advocate for me during a health crisis?
- Are my friendships and support relationships strong enough for the years ahead?
- What happens when friends move, become ill, or are no longer available?
- How can I intentionally build a stronger circle of support?
- What role can community play in protecting independence rather than diminishing it?
The objective is not to tell participants where they should live.
It is to help them think differently about what they will need to live well.
